Understanding Industrial Autoclaves & Their Functioning

Autoclaves are used in industrial and commercial applications. They are used to aid the production of many products including aircrafts, tires, glass, lumber, etc. They are usually used in the curing process of these various products such as to cure rubber on tires or the composites used in aircraft helping to make materials and machines that can withstand the rigorous environments they will be used in. What is an Autoclave?

An industrial autoclave is a heated pressure vessel with a quick opening door that uses high pressure to process and cure materials. It uses heat and high pressure to cure products or disinfect machines, devices, and instruments. At times they incorporate vacuum in the process also. The function of this machine changes with the industry. For example, in hospitals and laboratories, autoclaves are used to disinfect and sterilize equipment. On the other hand, in industrial settings like aerospace industry, industrial autoclaves are used to cure the composite parts of aircrafts. The quick opening door allows for easy access to the vessel which makes it easy to move product in and out. Although the end use of the autoclave changes, the theory behind the functioning of the machine remains the same. Several types of autoclaves are manufactured like rubber bonding/vulcanizing autoclaves, composite autoclaves, and many other types of industrial autoclaves.

How does an Autoclave Function When Used for Composites?

Autoclaves are used in several industries to help in the manufacturing of polymeric composites. Although the process of autoclaving can be used in several industries, it is often used in aviation. The following is one method of curing composites. In this method, separate pre-preg plies are placed in their final configuration in bags under vacuum and then the bags are pressurized on the outside while maintaining vacuum on the inside to form a single composite layer that is consistent in quality and structure. In the case of thermoset pre-pegs, high temperatures will be used in the initial and final staged of the autoclaving process. The pressure and temperature in these machines are controlled separately, hence are independent of one another.

The process of autoclaving allows autoclave manufacturers and their customers to produce materials of the highest quality. The heat and pressure in an autoclave is used to a variety of products, helping in improving the overall quality and strength of these products. Hence, the machines and aircrafts used in the aviation industry are able to handle demanding environments.
