Processes Involved in Obtaining Pressure Vessel ASME U Stamp Certification

In the pressure vessel manufacturing industry, ASME certification is only awarded to manufacturers who can build vessels in compliance with the ASME code. What are the procedures a manufacturer must follow to gain ASME certification/accreditation? This blog discusses the steps in brief.

ASME Certification Process Outlined

ASME U StampNowadays, customers prefer purchasing vessels from ASME certified manufacturers. This is because customers are aware that ASME certified vessels are built to the highest standards by following stringent safety guidelines.

As a pressure vessel manufacturer, you must have a clear understanding of the procedures involved in obtaining ASME U Stamp certification. The steps are listed below:

  1. Understand the Basics: Before applying for the accreditation, ensure that you:
    • Read and understand the checklists, and ensure that you have an in-depth understanding on the certification program.
    • Decide on the scope of work that will be certified by ASME.
    • Review the application form.
  2. Application: Post the preparation stage, you can submit the application form, along with the fees (Refer ‘Price Guide’ section in the ASME website for more information). Ensure that your application is complete, and is submitted with the right information. Any fraudulent information will result in rejection.
    Consider the following when submitting the application:

    • If you are a first time applicant, you need to create a CA Connect Account.
      Note – For more information on the same, read the ‘CA Connect User Guide’ provided in the ASME website.
    • If you are an existing account holder, check and verify the primary contact information again. In case you need to change the contact details, please follow the instructions provided under ‘How to Change Primary Contact Information’ provided in the ASME website.
    • Submit the application, along with a signed Accreditation and Certification Agreement Form.
  3. Assessment :Once the ASME review team receives the application form, the actual assessment begins. The assessment team examines how stringently the manufacturer has implemented the quality programs when designing, manufacturing, and inspecting pressure vessels. The purpose of the assessment is to make sure that the applicant’s manufacturing processes are in compliance with the requirements of ASME standard. After the assessment, the review team will submit the evaluation report to a higher authority.
  4. Certification :If the applicant successfully demonstrates the implementation of quality programs in every stage of the vessel manufacturing, he/she is entitled to receive ASME certification. Once the pressure vessel manufacturer receives the accreditation, s/he can stamp ASME mark on the vessel’s surface.

Gaining ASME certification is not a Herculean task. Ensure that you understand the safety guidelines and other recommendations of ASME before starting with the product manufacturing. This allows you to design and fabricate pressure vessels in compliance with the recommendations of ASME, and thus obtain the certification easily.
